Mersey Waste Munchers

More than 2,500 people have attended Let’s Get Cooking clubs in Merseyside and Halton to find out how to reduce their food waste. The sessions, funded by Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA) Community Fund with support from Love Food Hate Waste, focused on waste reduction skills such as meal planning, portion sizes, food storage, using leftovers and understanding date labels.

‘Mersey Waste Munchers’ taught practical food skills in a fun and supportive way which helps families cut their food waste and makes their budgets go much further. Since its launch in 2013, 100% of participants reported reducing their food waste at home.

As a result of the project:

  • 85% of families planned meals more efficiently by creating a list before shopping
  • 78% chilled or froze leftovers to eat later instead of throwing away
  • 70% avoided waste by checking the ‘use-by’ dates on packets and buying foods which aren’t about to go out of date
  • Every family said they had reduced the overall amount of food wasted by their family since their involvement with the project.

Our current (2017-18) project is working with early years settings in Merseyside and Halton.
